I have followed my interest and given over a large part of my life to art since retiring from Medicine in 2017. In that time I have:
- completed 3 years of painting courses in figure and portrait at City Lit in Covent Garden (2020-2023)
- completed the Diploma in Portraiture at the Heatherley School of Fine Art (2023-2025)
- accepted a place at City and Guilds to do an MA in Fine Art (to begin September 2025)
With just under a decade of experience and learning in drawing, painting, and latterly print making, I am now increasingly finding my own direction, favouring more expressive and looser working
My interest in portraiture is a proxy for my abiding lifelong interest in people. To paint a successful portrait I believe I need to create a good likeness through a skilful use of paint. But this is not sufficient in and of itself – achieving an emotional response from my viewer is an absolute requirement, without this my portrait fails.
As an artist, I have a particular interest in the vulnerability of people...the elderly, children, the homeless, to name a few. We are all vulnerable in some way. The next step for my development as an artist will be about exploring the vulnerability of people, and in my own small way to redress the underrepresentation of the vulnerable in art.
In the next pages I present some of my work in 3 sections:
- Painting
- Print Making and
- Drawing
